The Community School of the Park Cities

Infant Toddler Program

Guided by the principles of Attachment Parenting, infants are held face to face, carried in slings, talked to, read to and sung to throughout their day.  They are allowed ample time to explore, push up, crawl, and interact with friends.  Older babies are offered simple art activities and age appropriate puzzles, blocks, and other materials.  Infant classrooms have a maximum of eight children.  Teachers get to know each infant personally and are able to respond quickly to individual needs.  Children follow routines for eating and sleeping according to the natural rhythm that babies develop for themselves.

Toddlers at the Community School spend their time in a relaxed, multi-sensory environment with a maximum of twelve children in each room.  Jean Piaget's theories support that sensory experiences evolve into more symbolic learning as children grow.  This Cognitive Development Theory is utilized during the toddler years at The Community School.  Toddlers begin to follow a daily routine as a group while still having their individual needs recognized.  They are still babies in many ways, but want very much to "do it myself."  Age appropriate activites utilizing thematic units are offered to encourage development of basic skills such as letter, number and shape recognition, with plenty of time to freely explore the classroom and outdoor environments.
