Preschool and Kindergarten

The Preschool and Kindergarten classes at The Community School are led by degreed and/or state certified teachers. Children work at an appropriate level of development and cognitive understanding. We strive for a strong classroom environment emphasizing academic excellence, helping each student fulfill his or her own potential at a reasonable pace. In our close-knit family-like setting children learn together rather than passively receive information. Children acquire an understanding (not merely rote memorization) of language skills, principles of mathematics, science, the arts, history and geography. Children are the guiding force in the daily classroom routine; their interests and ideas inspire much or the curriculum content with the teacher acting as a facilitator rather than purely an instructor. Children spend as much time as possible each day exploring the outdoors. Group games and gardening as well as other special activities all take place outdoors. We offer a Kindergarten Enrichment program in the mornings for children preparing to enter Kindergarten the following year. Children who spend their preschool days at The Community school benefit socially and emotionally from the small group setting and individual attention.
